Barb developed her love of all animals at an early age growing
up in rural Michigan. "Beginning my show career with Arabian
horses, I bring the same enthusiasm into the llama show arena."
Self employed as an independent representative in the
electronics industry; the llamas are a wonderful escape from
the every day hustle and bustle of the high tech world.
Tom and Barb joined in the llama adventure together after their
marriage and began transforming the old farm in 1988. The
farmhouse, built when Abraham Lincoln was president, required
a lot of attention, to put it mildly.
Tom's love of the traditional Harley-Davidson motorcycle and his
success within the Corporation, retaining the famous Brand
recognition in the products Harley-Davidson markets, has
translated into our strong feelings within our breeding program
as well. Maintaining the beautiful frame of the original llama while
adding excitement in fiber and style is a lesson learned from
Harley-Davidson's on going success for 100 years.
Today, Animal Acres is known nationally for our elite herd of
llamas. Small in number, around 30, the foundation females and
Herd Sires have consistently produced ALSA and Futurity
champions. As their enthusiasm for the llamas continued to
develop, Barb and Tom's involvement in the llama industry
also continued to grow. Tom is a past President of the Wisconsin
Organization of Lama Enthusiasts and is presently serving
on the Finance Committee for ALSA.
Barb has been a Llama and Alpaca Club 4-H leader for over
8 years in two counties. 2005 will be her third term on the
LFA Board of Directors. She and Tom are Lifetime members
of the LFA and Barb was just re-elected to another 2 year term.
She is also serving on the Show Committee for ALSA in 2005.
They both believe it is important to not only volunteer their time,
but also support the industry financially through sponsorships
of local and national events. Past premium sponsors for the
LFA Championship Show and Sale, ALSA Grand Nationals,
and going sponsors for the Spring Celebrity Show and Sale,
their commitment to the on-going success of the llama
industry is very apparent.
Style, elegance, correct conformation, and beautiful fiber was our
goal from the beginning. The Suri Style Llama is now a primary focus
in Animal Acres breeding efforts.
The Suri's are now about ½ of our breeding female population. The
goal remains the pursuit of beautiful presence and fiber without
compromising the big, strong frame, which makes a llama a llama.
The pastures are open, the coffee is on, and visitors are always welcome.
